GLM-4.5

GLM-4.5, which Z.ai shipped on July 28, 2025 alongside the smaller GLM-4.5-Air, is a 355-billion-parameter open-weights mixture-of-experts model built for agents, coding and reasoning, with a thinking mode and an instant mode.

  • Model: GLM-4.5 (zai-org/GLM-4.5)

  • Maker: Z.ai

  • Ship date: July 28, 2025

  • Pricing: Free (open weights)

  • Context: 128K tokens

  • Weights: Open (MIT)

  • Where you can use it:

  • When to reach for it:

    • Agentic coding with reliable tool calls

    • Self-hosting a big MIT-licensed model

    • Skip it for images; it reads text only

  • How it compares:

    • Z.ai pits it against Claude Sonnet 4

    • Rivals Kimi K2 and DeepSeek R1 0528

  • What makes it different:

    • 355B total, 32B active per token

    • Thinking and instant modes in one model

    • GLM-4.5-Air: 106B total, 12B active

  • Early reactions: Simon Willison called it another significant open-weight release, and early testers found the smaller Air version a strong local coding model on a 128GB Mac.

The benchmarks

Z.ai's own launch numbers, with reasoning tests in thinking mode, against o3, Claude Opus 4, Claude Sonnet 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 4 and open peers as Z.ai printed them; SWE-bench Verified ran in OpenHands capped at 100 iterations, Terminal-Bench used the Terminus harness, TAU-bench used Z.ai's own optimized user simulator, AIME is an average of 32 runs, and Humanity's Last Exam is the text-only subset graded by GPT-4o.

Z.ai's numbers
