# what to know for now

💰 **Anthropic's revenue hit $16.8 billion last quarter, and investors read it as a slowdown.** Anthropic told prospective investors at a pre-IPO meeting that Q3 revenue grew about 45% from Q2's $11.6 billion, after Q2 more than doubled Q1's $4.7 billion. Reuters reports investors are now talking about a valuation around $1.5 trillion instead of the roughly $2 trillion they expected, and the listing will likely wait until after the November midterms. 🧠 **Meta's Muse Wonder Full is tied for the second-smartest model on Artificial Analysis's leaderboard.** It scores 56 on the Intelligence Index, level with Claude Sonnet 5.5 and two points behind Claude Opus 5.5, with Gemini 4 Argon, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 all at 53. But you can't build on it yet, since Wonder Full only runs inside a Muse Code subscription, while the smaller Muse Wonder (52) is on Meta's Model API at $4 / $20 per million tokens.

📉 **Anthropic's own economists found its junior hiring fell from 27% to 9% of new technical hires.** Their October 16 study of the company's workforce says engineers now commit about five times as much code as six months ago, and by August the AI agents employees direct were logging six times as many hours as the people directing them. Non-technical staff went from 2 coding-agent sessions a month in August 2025 to 90 in May. [Read more](https://www.anthropic.com/research/employment-at-anthropic)

🏦 **Bank of America brought in 1,000 contractors to fix the security holes Anthropic's Mythos found.** CEO Brian Moynihan said on the October 14 earnings call that the bank "added 1,000 extra staff" as consultants for the Mythos work, and that Mythos and anti-money-laundering cleanup together cost "a couple hundred million dollars plus." And he still expects AI benefits to grow from about $300 million this year to $700 million next year. [Read more](https://thenextweb.com/news/bank-of-america-1000-contractors-mythos-flaws)

💸 **Accenture now pays for $29 a month of Claude per employee, after some staff ran up bills as high as $1,000.** Anything above that goes on a project code under a memo effective October 1, which 404 Media's Joseph Cox reported October 15. Accenture says its approach is "to provide the right tool for the right work" (at $29, that's a lot of Haiku). 🤖 **OpenAI posted four more cases of its models breaking rules in testing, bringing its public list to 19.** In one, a model in training grabbed server credentials and pulled 24 years of hospital-bed statistics off a government site, and in another it unlocked a test cryptocurrency wallet with publicly known recovery phrases and spent its test-network funds. OpenAI didn't find out about three of the four June incidents until August or September. [Read more](https://alignment.openai.com/misalignment-reports/)

♊ **Gemini 4 Argon is out for everyone who pays for Gemini, two weeks after Google limited it to cyber defenders.** Since October 13, Pro and Ultra subscribers get it in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, and developers get the API at an introductory $2 / $10 per million tokens that doubles to $4 / $20 after November 30. ## 🧪 AI Research of the Week

**[How Heavily Are PhD Students Offloading Their Scientific Writing to AI?](https://nber.org/papers/w35859)**
*From Daniel Gross and Hansen Zhang (Duke) and Dror Shvadron (University of Toronto), via NBER*

**Jake's Take:** These three economists ran the abstracts of about 226,000 US STEM dissertations, nearly every one filed from 2019 through May 2026, through Pangram, a commercial AI-text detector. Before 2023 it flagged six abstracts out of roughly 126,000, which is about what you'd expect from false alarms. Then ChatGPT happened. The share went from 1.7% of 2023 dissertations to 5.5%, then 18.8%, then 29.4% of the ones filed so far in 2026.

- Computer science sits at 48% and civil engineering at 51%, while MIT is at 9% and Caltech at 10%
- 41% of 2026 abstracts from students educated in non-English-speaking countries got flagged, against 23% for everyone else
- The authors project that most US STEM dissertations will contain AI-written text by 2028

Among US-origin grads of top research universities, the ones with AI-flagged dissertations were 7.4 points less likely to land in academia (on a 44% base) and 8 points more likely to go into industry. The authors call it a correlation. Students already headed for industry might just care less about the writing. But if you hire PhDs, nearly a third of this year's class had help writing the thing that's supposed to prove they can do research alone (and the paper itself says an LLM helped draft parts of it, which, fair).

# what to know for later

🎙️ **SpaceX's Grok Voice 3.0 is the top-ranked voice AI on Artificial Analysis, at the same $0.08 a minute as the last version.** It scored 86.9 on the speech-to-speech index, ahead of OpenAI's GPT-Live-1 at 83.2, and apps on the "grok-voice-latest" setting got switched over automatically on October 14. SpaceX says its Starlink call centers already answer 20,000 calls a day with it, about 70% with no human involved. [Read more](https://x.ai/news/grok-voice-3)
