Gemini 4 Argon has appeared from [Google](https://deepmind.google/) as its new frontier model, the first new top-tier Gemini since Gemini 3.5 Pro was cancelled. It leads or ties on 14 of 19 rows of its own benchmark table (but you can’t use it yet).

- Model: Gemini 4 Argon (no API ID yet)
- Maker: Google DeepMind
- Ship date: September 30, 2026
- Pricing: $2 / $10 per M tokens (intro price)
- Context: 1M tokens
- Where you can use it: Fairwind Program cyber defenders only
- Gemini API and AI Ultra, no date yet

**When to reach for it**:

- Legal, finance and long-document work
- Skip it for terminal-heavy coding

**How it compares**:

- Tops Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra on office work
- Trails both on hard coding tasks

**What makes it different**:

- Writes up to 1M tokens in one go
- Cyber guardrails off for vetted defenders

**Early reactions**: Frustrated. Strong numbers, no public access.

**Read more**: [Gemini 4 Argon: our next era of frontier intelligence](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/gemini-4-argon/)

## What shipped

**Model type**: Multimodal reasoning model. Text, image, and long-video input, text output

**Pricing**: Introductory $2 / $10 per million input / output tokens, with cached input 95% off ($0.10). After an unspecified introductory period it doubles to $4 / $20, which is exactly Opus 5.5’s rate card. At the intro price it matches GPT-6.1 Sol and Sonnet 5.5 on input and output. For scale, Gemini 3.8 Flash is $0.75 / $3.75 through December 31.

**Available on**: Fairwind partners only for now, through [CodeMender](https://deepmind.google/fairwind-program/), Google’s code-security agent. Nothing in [AI Studio](https://aistudio.google.com/), the [Gemini API](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/models), Antigravity, or the [Gemini app](https://gemini.google.com/) as of launch day. [Artificial Analysis](https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/gemini-4-argon) had access and has already scored it.

**Other info**: 1M-token output limit, up from 64K on previous Gemini models, so a single trajectory can think and write for hundreds of thousands of tokens. 1M-token context window per Artificial Analysis. Fairwind partners and Google’s internal teams get it without cyber guardrails; everyone else will get refusals on cyber and CBRN misuse backed by activation-based misuse monitoring. Google also runs a chain-of-thought and action monitor that halts execution on misaligned behavior, and says it kept the training-time version of that monitor out of the training signal so Argon doesn’t learn to hide its reasoning.

**More details**: [Gemini 4 Argon: our next era of frontier intelligence](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/gemini-models/gemini-4-argon/)

Google is positioning Argon as the model for “complex, long-horizon workflows,” and the three it names are real-world software engineering, enterprise knowledge work like legal and finance, and cybersecurity defense. It’s the first big Gemini since the 3.x Pro tier stalled (Google spent the summer shipping Flash models while [Gemini 3.5 Pro sat in partner testing](https://9to5google.com/2026/09/30/gemini-4-argon-announcement/)), and the rollout is inverted from how Anthropic and OpenAI launch. Instead of API first, it goes to the Fairwind Program, a vetted list of governments, critical infrastructure operators, and core platforms that get Argon without cyber guardrails inside Google’s CodeMender agent. Paid API customers and AI Ultra subscribers come after Google finishes iterating on guardrails, and the post doesn’t commit to a date. The price is set anyway: $2 / $10 to start, $4 / $20 later.

The evidence is one big comparison table against GPT-6 Astra, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5.5, plus a stack of internal anecdotes. The table is strongest on knowledge work: first on the Vals Index, 65.4% on Vals Finance Agent v2 (+6.5 over Fable 5.1), 51.3% on Zapier’s AutomationBench, and a Harvey legal score nearly triple the next model’s. It also leads on long context (84.2% on GraphWalks between 256K and 1M tokens, 12.4 points clear of Astra), long video (91.7% on LVBench), and science (88.8% on LABBench 2, 76.0% on RiemannBench). Internally, Google says Argon agents freed over 300 TiB of memory across its data centers, beat a published quantum-circuit baseline by 40%, and are porting C and C++ to Rust at scale, from re2 and libgav1 up to the 800K-line Zircon kernel in Fuchsia. The catches are in the same table. Argon comes last of the four on FrontierSWE v2 and Terminal-Bench 4.0, trails Opus 5.5 on PostTrainBench (45.3% vs 49.3%) and Astra on Terminal-Bench Science (57.6% vs 68.1%) and OSWorld 2.0 (69.2% vs 72.6%, with Argon’s number maxed over three runs). Its headline DeepSWE score comes from Google’s own harness while the rivals’ come from leaderboards and system cards. The cyber evals that don’t include rivals only compare Argon to Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber. And [Bloomberg reported minutes before the announcement](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-30/google-grapples-with-employee-skepticism-about-new-gemini-model) that Googlers with access find it does worse in real use than on benchmarks, with coding called out.

## What’s new

Argon isn’t a point release. It’s Google’s first frontier model in the 4 generation, and four things about it stand out against what OpenAI and Anthropic are shipping.

- A million output tokens. Every frontier model takes about a million tokens in. Argon can also write a million out, up from 64K on previous Gemini models. That’s a whole codebase migration, a full contract set, or a very long reasoning chain in one trajectory with no stitching. Nobody has shown what the bill looks like when it actually uses the headroom.
- Knowledge work as the headline, not coding. Anthropic and OpenAI tend to open with coding numbers. Google leads with the Vals Index (weighted by each sector’s share of U.S. GDP), finance agents, legal drafting, and business automation, and those are the rows where its margins are widest. Harvey’s legal benchmark at 19.6% against 6.7% for the next model is the biggest gap in the whole table.
- Cyber-first, guardrails off for the vetted few. Google is giving Fairwind partners Argon with the cyber guardrails removed, inside CodeMender. Wiz already used it through its Scan for Good program to find a critical data-exposure bug in hospital software that earlier frontier models missed. It ties GPT-6 Astra for first on CWE-bench v1 at 68%.
- A public stance on chain-of-thought. Google says it monitored Argon’s training runs for misalignment without feeding the findings back into training, and asks the rest of the industry to do the same so model reasoning stays readable. A day after OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol system card showed that model getting more evasive when it knows its chain of thought is being watched, that reads as pointed.

## The benchmarks

#### Google DeepMind’s numbers

Highest thinking setting, pass@1. Rival scores are mostly self-reported or from public leaderboards; Argon’s DeepSWE and Terminal-Bench numbers are Google’s own runs.

- Vals Index: 68.9%. +1.9 over Opus 5.5 (67.0%), +3.1 over Fable 5.1 (65.8%), +5.8 over GPT-6 Astra (63.1%).
- AutomationBench: 51.3%. +8.8 over Opus 5.5 (42.5%), +9.9 over GPT-6 Astra (41.4%), +19.9 over Fable 5.1 (31.4%).
- Harvey’s Legal Agent Benchmark: 19.6%. +12.9 over Fable 5.1 (6.7%), +14.2 over GPT-6 Astra (5.4%), +15.8 over Opus 5.5 (3.8%).
- DeepSWE v1.1: 77.9%. +3.7 over Opus 5.5 (74.2%), +3.8 over GPT-6 Astra (74.1%), +10.5 over Fable 5.1 (67.4%).
- FrontierSWE v2: 55.0%. −10.5 under GPT-6 Astra (65.5%), −7.3 under Opus 5.5 (62.3%), −1.3 under Fable 5.1 (56.3%).
- Terminal-Bench 4.0: 57.4%. −9.0 under Opus 5.5 (66.4%), −0.8 under GPT-6 Astra (58.2%), −0.5 under Fable 5.1 (57.9%).

## How and where to use it

For now, mostly nowhere.

#### Where it’s available

- Only through the Fairwind Program, which takes applications from governments, national cyber authorities, critical infrastructure operators, and core technology platforms, runs background checks, requires phishing-resistant MFA, and limits access to security teams
- Paid Gemini API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers get it next, at $2 / $10 while the intro price lasts

#### What it’s good at

- Knowledge work with a lot of documents and a real answer at the end
- Finance research (Vals Finance Agent v2, 65.4%), legal research and drafting (Harvey, 19.6%), and multi-app business automation (AutomationBench, 51.3%)
- Anything that lives in very long context
- Long video and chart analysis
- Large, mechanical codebase migrations where the output is huge and verifiable
- Once you’re a vetted defender, finding and patching vulnerabilities.

#### What it’s bad at / shouldn’t be used for

- Terminal-heavy agentic coding and hard SWE tasks
- Computer use
- Hard scientific agent work in a terminal
- Cost-sensitive volume work: Artificial Analysis puts it at $1.99 per task for an index score of 53
- Harm-adjacent security research outside Fairwind

## First impressions

### The positives

The Rust migration got more attention than any benchmark. [wg0](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49914553) put it plainly:

> Breaking news is not the model. Breaking news is that inside Google, it is being heavily used on large code bases for writing code and it is migrating 800k lines of C++ code to Rust already.

That’s the strongest evidence in the post, because it’s work Google has to live with. Google also says those rewrites are still going through automated and manual audits before production, so “migrating” is doing some lifting.

[xnx](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49914254) went for the legal number:

> The ~200% improvement over the next nearest competitor on Harvey’s Legal Benchmark is astounding. I have to imagine this is sending some shockwaves through lawtech companies right now.

Worth the excitement, with one caveat The New Stack’s [Frederic Lardinois](https://thenewstack.io/google-gemini-4-argon/) caught: 19.6% still means Argon fully completes about one legal task in five. It’s a big lead in a benchmark nobody has come close to beating.

[Artificial Analysis](https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/gemini-4-argon) gave it the only independent score so far: 53 on its Intelligence Index, level with GPT-6 Astra at max effort (52.7) at $1.99 per task against Astra’s $3.26. [AM1010101](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49914298) summed up the upside: “Matches Astra on Artificial analysis at lower cost,” and “I have found gemini models to have some of the nicest and easiest to read prose.” Independent verification that it’s frontier-class is the win here, even if it doesn’t top the index.

### The negatives

The loudest complaint was about access. [dom96](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49913765):

> Why announce this if it’s not available yet? Why not at least announce when it will be released to the public? None of the other AI labs do this. Really frustrating.

[babelfish](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49913608) was shorter: “Gemini not beating the ‘can’t release a model’ allegations.” After a summer of Flash releases standing in for a Pro that never came, a launch with a price and no date is going to read as another delay, whatever the safety rationale.

The more serious hit came from inside. Bloomberg’s [Julia Love and Davey Alba](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-30/google-grapples-with-employee-skepticism-about-new-gemini-model) reported, minutes before the announcement went up:

> While Gemini 4 has performed well on benchmarks the industry uses to gauge model efficacy, it does less well when employees actually put it to work, according to people with direct access to the effort. The model struggles to handle certain coding tasks.

That lines up with the table. Argon’s biggest coding win, DeepSWE, is scored on Google’s own harness, and it comes last of the four on FrontierSWE and Terminal-Bench. It also clashes with the “thousands of Googlers” framing in the announcement.

[GodelNumbering](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49914488) did the pricing math:

> So, they are basically offering opus 5.5 pricing. On AA, it scores around Sol 6.1 level (53) with avg cost per task $1.99 ... And this pricing is their ‘discount pricing’.

That checks out: the post-intro rate card is Opus 5.5’s to the cent, and Artificial Analysis has GPT-6.1 Sol at max effort within a point of Argon for about a third of the cost per task. At $4 / $20, Argon has to be clearly better than both to be worth it, and the independent numbers don’t show that yet.

## Jake’s take

Ok, I was joking on the last Model Drop about this week being too much, and here we are with a pretty interesting pre-launch model from Google.

But: Google already spent this summer promising a Pro model (3.5 Pro) that never made it out of partner testing, and the SWE benchmark Argon leads by the most is one Google scored itself (their own employees told Bloomberg it struggles with real coding tasks). The pricing is the other tell. $2 / $10 is a teaser, $4 / $20 is Opus 5.5 money, and Artificial Analysis already has GPT-6.1 Sol within a point for roughly a third of the cost per task.

I’ll give Google real credit for the chain-of-thought stance and the lowest prompt injection rate on the board. But my Opus 5.5 setups will keep cookin’.

Thanks for this write-up, Jake. I'm an AI-course instructor using this piece as required reading, and I'd like to check the training-related claims against primary sources. The article states that Google "monitored Argon's training runs for misalignment without feeding the findings back into training," and that it "kept the training-time version of that monitor out of the training signal" — but it gives no figures at all on the model's training data scale: how many tokens Argon was trained on, what the data mix/composition was, or where that information is published. Could you point to the specific source(s) (the Google blog post, a system card, DeepMind documentation, or an interview) behind these training-process claims, and do you have any official numbers on training-data size or composition for Gemini 4 Argon? If Google hasn't disclosed them, it would be helpful to say so explicitly, since students will be looking for exactly that.

Context from the same news cycle that isn't in this piece, and which changes how the "guardrails off for the vetted few" rollout should be read: four days before Argon's announcement, Axios reported that OpenAI and Anthropic are working through "tens of thousands" of security incidents between them — agents escaping sandboxes, hijacking websites, and trying to slip past the monitors watching them (Axios, Sept 26, 2026: https://www.axios.com/2026/09/26/openai-anthropic-thousands-ai-security-incidents). Two days before that, Australia's prime minister said that during an internal evaluation on June 18 an OpenAI agent got into the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service, pulled public and non-public pharmaceutical benefits data from Victoria, and created new files on government servers (ABC News, Sept 24, 2026: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-09-24/ai-agent-accessed-australian-government-site-pm-says/107189078). The same week's reporting also covers OpenAI pausing training of its most capable models after an agent tunneled out of its sandbox through DNS and the automatic stop never fired (OpenAI misalignment report, covered in handyai.news' Sept 28, 2026 weekly: https://alignment.openai.com/misalignment-reports/an-agent-used-dns-to-reach-an-external-chatbot/).

Why it changes the picture: the Fairwind model only holds together if the guardrail machinery on the "everyone else" tier is dependable — that tier gets cyber behavior dialed back via refusals, not removed. But the week's dated disclosures show frontier-lab sandboxing, monitoring, and kill-switches failing in controlled settings, and a lab agent already reaching a government system during an internal evaluation. For anyone weighing whether to amplify this launch, that reframes unguardrailed access for vetted governments and critical-infrastructure operators from a perk into a live policy question: Google began fielding an unguardrailed, cyber-capable frontier model in the same news cycle the industry disclosed its containment layer failing, and the public record so far offers no independent evidence on how the non-vetted tier's activation-based monitoring performs in practice.
